The following day on Friday, the girls went to their school dance. There was a huge amount of talk about what to wear (and whether or NOT make up was an appropriate!). Our little tomboy Lexi really wanted to wear a dress, and Lizzie decided to wear some jeans and a spangly top. So Lexi came with me and I left Lizzie to get prepared while I went to school (a 2 min walk from the house) to get the food ready for the dance with some other friends. A while later once the dance had started, Lizzie made quite an entrance looking much older than her 10 years, giving me rather a shock (and a go
od glimpse into the future!). She had on a knee length ball dress I had bought her for parties a while ago - the brightest pink with iridescent orange netting over the top. She took a pair of MY (!) socks, cut off the toes to make them into fingerless gloves, wore a beret and cowboy boots. She looked far too old, but really beautiful and it was the first time I have seen her stand up straight and enjoy the way she looks. Of late she has been hunching over slightly to disguise her height and her speedily developing body, but on that evening sh was happy to be standing tall, it was lovely. Richard was able to come into the dance for a short while - his eyes nearly popped out of his head when he saw her!
On Saturday, it was a friend, Zoe's birthday। As her husband, Clare's and mine were on the prairie, Clare and I threw her a little birthday bash as my place. The house was teaming with children, which was great as they mostly took care of themselves and we were able to eat, sit and chinwag all afternoon.
The following weekend friends Sam and Andy invited us over for a dinner party. Poor old Richard had to leave half way through to fly a sortie। On his return however, he found all the female members of the party in a neighbour's hot tub (don't worry, the neighbour was one of the guest too!) so was very happy to join in the fun of sitting there in the cold, a little bit of light snow falling and lots of champagne. The other chaps joined us in the end too. It was a really nice, (totally random!) night.
On Sunday, the day after the dinner party, was drove to Calgary to collect my in-laws, Maggie and Andy from the airport. There has been much anticipation in our little prairie household - the children were beside themselves with excitement at seeing their grand parents again (as was I, but in a far less squealy, less jumping up and down fashion!). I miss Maggie hugely since we have come out here and our very regular phone calls have reduced rather, but Skype has been brilliant for keeping in touch.
ch. It was absolutely scorching when the arrived and the mosquitoes were out in full force, they seem to particularly like poor old Lizzie. A few days late however, when Maggie and Andy left to go on a glass top train trip across The Rockies, the weather turned again and became really quite cold with snow! When they returned from their trip (one I would love to take too - it sounded super), the it was still cool, but at least the snow had gone!During the few days Maggie and Andy were away I took the children to the circus - it wasn't quite as we expected.
The whole thing was glued together with four girls doing variations
on a theme with spinning plates, hula hoops, bending their bodies etc. Oh and not forgetting the frisbee catching terrier dog! It was a bit low key really and not what we had expected (we being the other six or so mothers and all our children from Ralston) so I decided to make it the best day out ever, buy letting the children eat all the trashy food they wanted, taco in a bag, ice creams, lemonade. They couldn't believe it was me buying the stuff!
There were two highlights though - just before the interval, the performers brought out two elephants and then let the children (pay through the nose!) for a ride. They absolutely loved it. Lots of smiles as it went once around the ring! There were also half a dozen grey ponies with sparkly wings attached. There was an audible intake of breath when they came out into the ring, they looked magical. In the last month, both Lizzie and Lexi have been away twice with the Guides and Brownies. A couple of weeks ago they went with a bus full of girls to a National Girl Guide/Brownie Rally in Edmonton (a six hour drive I think, leaving on Friday and returning on Sunday night. It was the first time Lexi had stayed away from family and although brave, was a little wobbly as she boarded the bus. Laura, a friend and super Guide leader, had organised that each younger girl would be sitting with an older girl on the journey. It was a really good idea and certainly helped. Just yesterday, we collected them from another weekend away in Elkwater which is much closer, about an hour and a half or so. It was such a pity as at this time of year, one would definitely expect to have good sunny weather here and Laura and her team had a whole bunch of outdoor activities planned. They still had lots of fun but more of the indoor kind.
During this month in particular, a fair amount of socialising a good number of the wives has been going on. Because there is a group of us whose husbands are on the prairie, weekends tend to feel long, so it is great to be able to get together Last Sunday, Zoe had a group of us over for a lovely Sunday lunch and last week I had mothers and children over for supper on Tues, Wed and Thurs!
Last Monday was Victoria day here (a national holiday in honour of both Queen Victoria's birthday and the current reigning Canadian sovereign's official birthday)
so a bunch of us husbandless lot decided to take the children for a (pretty shivery) picnic and then on to see Shrek at the cinema. It was a really nice was of passing the day which then finished off with half of us going to Montana's Saloon (yup, you read it correctly!) for supper.
The most recen
t even of the prairie was a party on Saturday thrown by friends Tom and Patty (with whom we stayed at New Year in The Rockies). It was a Caribbean party - they went to town with authentic food and excellent cocktails.
Patty asked me for inspiration regarding the decoration, so like a child in a sweetie shop, I spent Saturday morning with her decorating their house - putting up a clothes line with tiny Hawaiian and Caribbean shirts/shorts etc, decorating the mantelpiece with lots of tropical fruit, lots of leis blah blah blah. Lots of stuff actually, but I have no photos to show, so it would all be rather boring to read about, I am sure!Well, I shall sign off now with the last bit of news - Richard and I have just been diagnosed with tonsillitis. Nice. Funny though, how Richard is able to take time off work and lay half dead on the sofa, while I have to appear normal and do all the childrenny stuff........(sound familiar girls?......)
P.S. Lizzie said to me last night when we picked her up from the Guide camp - "Oh Mummy, are you alright? You look ill. Is Daddy ill too?" "Yes" "Oh....well, Mummy, you do know he's far worse than you don't you? Far faaaaar worse!" followed by a cheeky grin and a wink! And there you have it, a ten year old who definitely has the ways of the world sussed!
I just had to include this photo for absolutely no reason at all other than I just love it!
